Annaburg was built in 1892 as a summer home for Alexandria brewer Robert Portner and his family. At a time when few could afford such luxuries, the estate featured an early air-cooling system, electrical lighting, and indoor plumbing. Its 2,000 acres became a beloved community gathering place, remembered for leisurely strolls, family photographs, winter skating on frozen ponds, and events like the Dairy Festival, 4th of July fireworks, and even church baptisms in the estate’s pond.
Today, Annaburg is a City park and an important historic resource. Since becoming Manassas’s newest park in 2018, the 3.65-acre site has offered a peaceful setting for walks, picnics, and special events while keeping the story of this remarkable estate alive. The grounds, located at 9201 Maple Street, are open daily from sunrise to sunset and remain free for all to enjoy.
